Get Better Flea and Tick Control for Your Husky By Using These Steps

The Siberian husky loves the outdoors and requires a minimum of thirty minutes exercise to control their energies. Their beautiful coat is a great place for fleas and mites. The thick coat makes it easy for these parasites to build a home for your pet and make his life miserable. Fleas and ticks are parasites that affect most dogs. The Husky with their thick fur coat, becomes a convenient and comfortable place for the flea and ticks to hide and suck your pet's blood. It is advisable to check your pet for flea/ticks every time he gets home from outdoors especially if he has been playing in the grass or shrubs.

Symptoms of Flea/Tick infestation

Flea and Tick Control for HuskyIf you find your dog scratching and becoming irritable, check the area where he is scratching. Fleas stay very close to the skin and appear as salt and pepper specs on the fur. These are flea feces and eggs. Ticks and fleas are usually close to the ears, on the head and the hind where it becomes very difficult for the husky to remove them. Ticks are embedded in the skin which can be felt as globules when you run your finger through his coat such as when bathing or brushing your pet.

Removing Tick/fleas

Fleas can be removed using a small toothed comb. Brush gently and close to the skin and catch the fleas in the tooth of the comb. Fleas tend to fly around on the dog. Brush the dog with a cloth or paper sheet so that the eggs that fall along with the feces can be disposed off. Clean the bedding or if possible, change the bedding where fleas tend to multiply. Vacuum the whole area which includes sofas, carpets, and furniture. If vacuuming is not possible, apply flea powder so the fleas come out and you can easily vacuum them after they have fallen.

Ticks are a carrier of Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. The risk of Lyme disease increases if the tick remains attached for over 24 hours. Check your dog for ticks every time he comes back from the outdoors especially after being in grass and bushes. Check yourself for ticks when you come back from hiking, as ticks love to settle in moist places like your armpits or back of the knees. You act as a carrier for ticks and could transfer these to your pet.

When you find the tick embedded in your pet's skin do not use a burnt matchstick. This can force the tick to release toxins into your pet's body. Firmly pinch the tick between your index finger and thumb and remove it without breaking it. If it breaks, the spindle remains in the body of your husky which will cause infection.

Prevention

Visit a vet who will prescribe flea powder to be topically applied, and will either prevent the fleas and ticks or keep them away.
