Golden Retriever Anxiety Problems - Signs and Treatments
The Golden Retriever is an affectionate and caring pet and a particularly good choice for families with children. When the bond between the dog and the pet owner is strong and the dog becomes overly dependent, there is the potential for behavioral problems to occur, such as separation anxiety. These behaviors may lead to destructive behaviors, such as chewing and scratching. Treating the separation anxiety requires patience and consistency. Begin by spending small amounts of time apart from your pet. At first your dog may show attention seeking behaviors, such as barking and jumping. It is important to ignore these behaviors where possible to avoid reinforcing this behavior with attention. Gradually increase the duration of time spent apart. This may include allowing your pet to spend time outside alone and creating distractions for your pet as your leave the house.
Some common signs of separation anxiety include aggression and can be caused by lack of early socialization. There are some tips which may help to reduce the potential for separation anxiety later on. Try to avoid separating the puppy from its mother before 8 weeks of age. When your pet shows signs of aggression it is important to not do use force. However, do ensure that you set clear boundaries and illustrate to your dog that you are in-charge. Training your pet to obey commands and instructions is particularly important, and should be easier with a breed such as the Golden Retriever as they are considered to be highly intelligent. Consistency, time, and patience are also important to help turn an aggressive and anxious dog, into a manageable and keen member of the family.
Noise phobia is exhibited by fear to loud noises such as during thunderstorms, gunshots, fireworks, loud engines and sirens. Symptoms of mild noise phobia may include similar symptoms to those of anxiety, such as trembling and shaking. Your pet may attempt to hide under the bed and be afraid to go outside, even after the storm. Other symptoms include destruction of furniture, soiling within the house and attempt to escape the house.
Some noise phobias and anxieties can be reduced through training, which often includes behavior modification treatments. Desensitization is a common behavior modification treatment and begins by exposing the pet to a reduced noise level, and one which the dog feels comfortable with. Gradually the noise level is increased until your Golden Retriever becomes comfortable and is able to tolerate higher levels of noise. There are also medications available which can be prescribed by your veterinarian. Some medications are taken on a regular basis, whilst others are given at the time of event. It is important to discuss any risks or side effects with your veterinarian before deciding to choose these options.
