Helpful Tips and Valuable Advice for Grooming Your German Shepherd

Grooming a German Shepherd can be very easy, and they are considered to be relatively low maintenance, particularly when compared to some other breeds.

Brushing

When brushing your pet, allow them to lie on their side whilst sitting next to them, which way make the process easier. Begin brushing your pet following the direction in which the coat grows, from the head to the tip of the tail, using a shedding blade. The shedding blade is a flexible saw blade which is bent into a U-shape and helps to remove dead areas of coat. To finish, use a slicker brush and wipe the coat with a slightly damp cloth to pick up any stray hairs.

Bathing

As an adult, the German Shepherd only requires bathing three to four times a year. If you live in a place with a warm climate you may prefer to bathe your pet outdoors, although using the bathtub will also be suitable. Begin by preparing all the necessary supplies before you start to bathe your dog, such as shampoo, three or four old towels, and a non-slip bath mat. Select a shampoo designed for dogs with sensitive skin. It should also be tear-free to avoid discomfort. Use lukewarm water as hot water may irritate your pet's skin. Apply the shampoo, keeping it away from your pet's eyes and ears. Start from the top of the neck, working down and towards the back. Try not to apply too much shampoo as it may be difficult to rinse it all out completely. Bathe the head last because your pet may shake their head when it gets wet. It is best to rinse several times to prevent a dry coat and flaky or itchy skin.

Nail Care

The German Shepherd often has black toenails which are harder and denser than white nails. Their toenails may grow very quickly, and will need to be trimmed every three to four weeks. Examine the toes before clipping, to identify any ingrown nails, soreness, redness, swelling, or discharge. If these signs occur, you must bring your pet to a veterinarian for further examination.

Eye Care

It is important to regularly examine your pet's eyes to look for signs of any problems such as red eyes, cloudy eyes or signs of discharge, in which case you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

Ear Care

When cleaning your pet's ears, use a good commercial ear cleaner that does not contain alcohol. You should inspect and clean your German shepherd's ears twice a week, especially if they swim. If you see signs of ear infections, it is important to consult with your veterinarian as if left untreated, it may cause permanent damage.

Dental Care

Try to brush your pet's teeth at least three times a week, to help them remain healthy and pain-free. You may start with a finger brush until your pet allows you to use toothpaste and a toothbrush.
