Helpful Tips for Grooming Your Pit Bull

Although the Pit Bull needs very little grooming when compared to other long haired dog breeds, they still require a bit of grooming every now and then. This helps to maintain a healthy and clean coat. Grooming your pet at home is not only easy but it will also save you money. There is no specific training, equipment, or experience required. This may not be the best option for all pet owners, particularly those who do not have the extra time to carry out grooming at home. However, for those who do, this can also be a good time to bond with your pet.

Equipment needed to groom your Pit Bull:

Shampoo/Soap

Grooming a Pit BullIt is essential that you use shampoo which is specifically designed for dogs. Human shampoo is filled with chemicals which may ruin your pet's skin and coat. Choose one that smells good and leaves the coat nice and shiny after their bath. The special oils in their skin and fur help them stay clean for a long period of time. For this reason, it is only necessary to give your dog a bath once every 4-6 months. Excessive bathing will only wash off these natural oils and will make the coat dry and dull.

Brush

Use a brush with soft or rubber bristles rather than those with long or metal bristles, as these are not designed for dogs with short hair. Try to brush your dog's coat every week as this will help to get rid of any loose hairs that are trapped in their coat. This will significantly reduce the amount of hair you find on your carpet. Brush your dog outside if possible, as this will also reduce the amount of hairs that fall indoors.

Nail Clippers

Choose nail clippers which have been specifically designed for dogs and which can be found in many pet stores. Alternatively, you may choose to use a regular nail file. Clippers designed for humans will not work with your pet as these can break or split the nail which can be painful. Don't let your pet's nails grow out too much as these are more prone to getting caught in something, and can become easily torn or broken, which can be extremely painful and usually takes a while to heal.

Ear Wipes

It is essential to use ear wipes to clean your pet's ears instead of using Q-tips. Q-tips are not designed for dog's ears and may be quite dangerous, especially if your dog will not sit still when you try to clean his ears.

Toothbrush/Toothpaste

Similar to humans, dental hygiene is also very important for your Pit Bull. Dogs are also prone to cavities and require periodic visits to your veterinarian for dental checkups. When cleaning your pet's teeth at home, use a toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs and try to clean your pet's teeth at least once every other week.
