Border Collie Allergies – Know About Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

The Border Collie is a well-known pet which is found in many homes but which can also develop allergies. People like this breed because of its good looks and its medium size, making it good for smaller houses and apartments. Signs of allergies in this breed include red skin, constant itching, and scratching amongst various others. The fur coat is double layered and the outer layer is smooth and soft with a bit of feathering. The inner layer of the coat is rough and sometimes this is slightly wavy. Their ears are sharp and straight, but small in size. This breed requires regular brushing and during grooming, pet owners should be aware of signs of allergic reactions to allow pet owners to resolve problems quickly or visit the veterinarians where necessary.

Many Border Collies suffer from food allergies which can be found in other breeds. Food allergy is common because the dogs might consume something found outside the home, such as in the garden, although proper training can help to teach dogs and stop such behaviors. Unfortunately, it is often difficult for pet owners to determine the actual ingredients or food substance which is causing the allergy, as there are a wide variety of food substances which cause allergies. Your veterinarian may be able to help determine the cause and in some cases, blood tests can be carried out. In most cases, vets suggest an elimination diet, removing a particular food substance from your pet's diet to see if symptoms reduce. Your vet is also able to prescribe relevant medications such as anti- histamines or suggest ones which can be purchased from over the counter.

Usually, the allergies in the Border Collie will manifest as redness on the skin or dry patches, which can occur on many different areas of the body. Since the Border Collie has a lot of fur, you might not notice the red patches at first and only notice this when you observe your pet scratching at that particular area of their body. The collar region or the facial area usually has manifestations of allergies which can be seen more easily. When the allergy is caused by fleas and mites, your dog will constantly scratch or bite this particular area. This will help the owners identify the allergies. However, one of the best ways to determine signs of allergies is to look for these while grooming your pet. During grooming, look beneath the coat at the skin for any redness, bumps or scaly skin. In areas where the pet has been scratching too much, it may cause scabbing, bleeding, and signs of infection. It is also important to look around the ears, between the toes and beneath the stomach.
