They are happy listening to their owner and make for great companions. They are social and are happy to mingle with other pets or even strangers. English cocker spaniels are comfortable living in an apartment as long as they get enough outdoor exercise.

Cocker spaniels become attached to their owners and become very anxious when the owner leaves home. They feel that the leader is deserting him and so exhibits symptoms of separation anxiety. As a pet owner, it is very important to train your dog from the beginning so he does not suffer from separation anxiety.

Symptoms of Separation Anxiety and its Treatment

The English Cocker spaniel becomes very panicky at the simple action of you picking up your car keys or your bag. He starts barking and howling every time you prepare to leave. Do not shout or punish the dog. Simply trick him into believing that every time you pick up the keys/bag that it does not mean you are leaving. Pick up the keys/bag and go out of the door only to return in five minutes. This usually works and you can leave for work once your dog understands that you are going to come back.

Change your time of dressing or eating breakfast, as your pet associates these tasks with you leaving the house. A slight change in your timing will prevent your pet from becoming anxious.

Don't pet him or cuddle him just before you leave. Be as casual as possible as any extra affection will trigger his anxiety.

When you come back from the office, just greet him, and carry on with your chores. After fifteen minutes you can give him attention. Prevent him from following you from room to room and train him to be seated once you return home. This will control his anxiety.

When your pet begins suffering from anxiety issues, he will whine and bark while you are away. Your neighbors may inform you of this. An advanced phase of anxiety will be exhibited by your pet destroying articles in your home, such as chewing on soft furnishings, your favorite sofa, clawing on the door, and urinating or defecating inappropriately. This behavior is exhibited whether you are gone for five minutes or five hours. Try to help your English cocker spaniel control their anxiety. If it persists then take your pet to a behavior therapist, who will help him to train your pet.
