Dog Joint Swelling – Causes and Treatment
Dog joint swelling can be a symptom of many joint problems from injury, crucial ligament problems, infection or diseases such as Lyme and forms of bone cancer. In these cases, your veterinarian will suggest specific courses of treatment which may include surgery in cases of hip dysplasia, a developmental disorder where joints develop abnormally. Similarly casts or splinting may be required.
Dog joint swelling can be caused by fluid collection, tissue growth or abnormal movement or position of tissue. One common cause of joint swelling is arthritis. Canine arthritis can occur with the natural aging process where joints wear and tear, although dogs that have experienced a previous injury to the joints are overweight or large breed may be more susceptible. In arthritis, cartilage which acts as a shock absorber between the bones and provides mobility for the joint is worn away. When this occurs, mobility is reduced and bones may become exposed and rub against each other. This causes inflammation, swelling and pain.
Prescription medications such as Rimdayl, a non-steroidal anti inflammatory, may be prescribed. These reduce the inflammation but they do not address the cartilage problems within the joints. They may also be associated with many side effects, some of which can be fatal. For this reason, close monitoring of treatment by your veterinarian is required. Intra muscular injections such as Adequan may also be prescribed these help to prevent cartilage from wearing away so the bones cannot touch each other. Natural alternatives may be used to address dog joint swelling. Most dog joint products contain glucosamine and chondroitin ingredients which are important building blocks for cartilage formation. MSM is also another ingredient often found in joint supplements which has powerful anti inflammatory properties whilst helping to promote healing in the tissues.
Ensuring your dog has enough rest in between exercise is important, particularly if dog joint swelling is due to injury, such as sprains and dislocation. Physical therapy helps to restore strength and flexibility within the joint and should be carried out by a therapist and treatment monitored by your veterinarian. Preventative measures can be taken by ensuring your dog has regular exercise, proper nutrition and weight loss in overweight dogs. Using orthopedic beds or ramps in your household can help support your dog's mobility as well as ensuring a warm environment, as cold may exacerbate joint problems.
