This beautiful, heavy coat breed is a member of the Spitz family and is basically a sled dog. Being highly intelligent, outgoing, and adaptable, the Siberian husky has become one of the most popular pets as they are very easy to keep. This high energy dog requires daily exercise and they make excellent companions.

Bathing your pet often is not necessary as they keep themselves clean although it may be required after they have been outdoors and if they become dirty. 1. Use a soft cotton ball dipped in dog ear cleaning solution
2. Clean the inner and the outer ear
3. Be careful not to push dirt into the ear inner ear canal as this may cause infection
4. Gently swab the inner ear with an outward motion thereby removing the dirt and debris
5. Dry the ears well as wet ears are a breeding ground for bacterial infection
6. Be very gentle as this breeds skin is very tender and sensitive

Ear infections are not that common in the husky particularly if you take proper care of your pet. A weekly cleaning can keep ear problems at bay. Look for early symptoms of an ear infection and treat it soon as possible, to avoid discomfort and pain to your lovely companion. Symptoms are:

• Shaking head constantly
• Itching or scratching the outer ear with the paw or against the furniture
• Wax buildup
• Bad odor from the ear
• Unusual discharge

If you observe any of these symptoms, immediately take your pet to the vet for timely treatment.

Causes Of Ear Infection In Huskies

The main cause of ear infections is when the area around the ear is not dried properly. The husky has a thick coat which must be kept absolutely dry as a damp coat is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria which causes ear infection. Dry the ears every time they become wet such as after bathing or swimming.

Huskies need to exercise in the outdoors to compensate for the energy they have. There are chances of getting fleas, mites, and grass seeds in their beautiful fur coat. Check him for mites every time he comes back home from his outdoors exercise.

Ear infections are related to skin allergies or sensitivity to some foods. The dog's ears become inflamed, itchy and scratching causes dry scabs around the ear and hair loss.

Some huskies are also allergic to some medications and as an owner it is important to be aware of what may be triggering your pet's ear infection. A regular ear cleaning routine will keep the mites and bugs away from your husky keeping them healthy and happy.
