Grooming a Poodle - What You Need to Know?

Grooming is a great way to bond with your pet Poodle. Not only does it save you money, but it also gives you time to shower your affection, and treat your pet, as they love to be pampered.

Grooming a Poodle

Steps to groom your poodle:
1. Choose a table or platform where you can comfortably make your pet stand and work easily

2. Attach a collar, as they tend to wiggle

3. Get all the tools and equipment ready before you start grooming your pet

4. Clip the hair on the face first. If this is the first time, secure your dog either with a collar or ask your friend to help you hold the dog to keep them steady. Once they are accustomed to grooming, they will stand still and you can easily hold the head with one hand and clip with the other

5. Carefully clip around the eyes towards the ears. Clean under the neck by holding their neck up. Make sure you clip slowly and steadily with the assumption that your pet might move. This way you are prepared if it happens and can prevent any injury

6. Clip the hair on the poodle's feet by lifting that leg and making sure they do not slip off the surface. Separate the toe pads and clip the hair from between them.

7. Hold the front feet up so as to make your pet stand on its hinds. Clip the belly hair and hair from the inner hind legs

8. Hold the tail up and trim from base of tail to about an inch from the end, continue trimming his bottom hair too

9. Bathe and dry your pet. Blow dry the hair and brush against the growth to give it the fluffy look

10. Clipping the poodle's nails is very tricky. Look for the 'quick' which is red colored. Do not cut this, as this will cause bleeding. Keep the styptic pencil ready in case you accidentally do this

11. Keep the ears clean of debris and wax. Do not let water enter the ear as it may cause infection, instead keeps the inside of the ears absolutely dry. Put cotton balls in the ears when bathing your poodle, so that water does not enter the ears. Use a pair of hemostats for plucking hair that grows inside the ears

12. Brush teeth. Begin by gently rubbing their teeth as a puppy and gradually introduce them to the toothpaste and toothbrush

Your pet is not only a beautiful dog but is also an intelligent one, which makes it very easy to train them. Poodles are a very healthy breed with a life span of almost thirteen years. Groom your dog to suit your style, which can be aristocratic or elegant. Enjoy grooming your pet and develop a bond for a long lasting companionship.
