Rottweiler Allergies – Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

The Rottweiler is an energetic breed of dog that requires a high protein diet to maintain their muscular physique and shiny coat. The Rottweiler's stomach is very sensitive and causes this breed to suffer from food allergies. Food allergies are a major issue in Rottweiler, although this breed also suffers from skin and inhalant allergies. Rottweiler AllergiesAllergies are usually genetic and may surface at any stage of your pet's life. The allergies that this breed suffers can be classified as:

Food Allergy

Your pet may develop a food allergy to beef, lamb, chicken, soy, corn, and dairy products. Begin by feeding your pet all natural foods. If your pet does show symptoms of an allergy, try to identify which food does not suit him. There are also certain tests that can be carried out by your veterinarian
  • Environmental Allergy
When the pollens in the environment are inhaled, they cause allergies in some canines. This allergic reaction is usually seasonal, occurring when the season changes. The pollens from the grass, weeds, and trees that float in the atmosphere cause allergies when inhaled
  • Contact Allergy
Your pet may be allergic to the household products such as detergents, carpets, fabrics, plastics or dog shampoos. Keep your pet away from these substances or change the detergents, air fresheners and keep them away from contact with the carpet or fabrics. Some canines are allergic to cigarette smoke as well and so avoid smoking when around your pet
  • Flea Allergy
The flea is a parasite that troubles many breeds. They suck blood from your pet thereby injecting the saliva in the body. An allergy to the saliva causes the allergic reaction. Your pet will scratch and this may cause the skin to open and become prone to infections.

The substances that cause an allergic reaction are called allergens. The immune system of Rottweiler becomes over stimulated when it comes in contact with the allergen causing the allergic reaction. The symptoms of an allergy are:
  • Scratching/itching
  • Chewing/licking
  • Dry skin with hair loss
  • Watery eyes
  • Ear infection with unusual discharge/odor
  • Sneezing/wheezing/coughing
  • Whining
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomit/diarrhea

The Rottweiler exhibits the same symptoms for any allergy. Scratching consistently may be due to flea infestation. Check for fleas every time your pet returns from being outdoors. Remove the fleas with a flea comb and regularly brush your pet on a white sheet of cloth or paper to collect the eggs and feces. Watery eyes, itchy eyes, scaling of the skin, licking and chewing the paw are all symptoms of allergies. In extreme cases, your pet may suffer from a loss of appetite, flatulence, vomiting, or diarrhea. There is no cure for an allergy, only the symptoms can be treated to give relief to your pet.
