Beagle Behavior suggesting separation anxiety is:
  • In your absence, your pet chews on personal belongings like socks, shoes or your chair

  • Every time you leave, your pet begins to howl, bark or even cry
  • Follows you from room to room when you return back home

This kind of behavior is not bad behavior but separation anxiety. It occurs when your pet becomes stressed at the thought of being left alone, which results in howling, barking, crying, or some destructive activities

  • Change in family routine or schedule
  • Passing away of a member of the family or children going off to college. Similarly, the introduction of a new member to the family which changes the family structure
  • Moving homes
  • Change in the dog's routine

It is the pet owner's responsibility to help their pet overcome separation anxiety. Do not pay much attention to your dog when you leave the house, instead down play your exit and your pet will know that this is a routine affair and does not require an extreme reaction. Wait for five minutes after you enter the house before giving your pet attention. Try to trick your pet by picking up your car keys or bag as if you are leaving but do not leave. Over time they will remain calm even when you do leave the house. Also begin leaving for short periods of time and gradually increase this. Dogs usually sleep most of the day if they exercise enough. Increase your pet's daily exercise, as this will help to tire out your pet and reduce anxiety.

Extreme separation anxiety causes your pet to destroy property such as ripping the sofa, chewing holes in the wall, or injuring themselves. This condition therefore needs immediate professional help.

Shower your pet with loads of love and affection, which will help them to control their anxiousness. Once your pet overcomes anxiety, you can enjoy the company of an extremely healthy and affectionate Beagle.
